Hi everyone! And welcome to the first episode of Cinematic Breadcrumbs – a podcast presented by Inglorious Baguettes that covers all things film, including food, fun facts, fashion, culture, & more.
My name is Elise & I am the person behind the Inglorious Baguettes Instagram account & website & now I’ll be your host here!
For those who aren’t already familiar, Inglorious Baguettes was a site I started a few years ago that just gave me a space to review all the movies I was watching – as I worked my way through long lists of Must See’s like the 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die Steven Jay Schneider’s ever evolving top picks or even just the countless lists recommended by friends over the years. The intent was to always provide food & drink pairings with the films that I was watching because that’s my favorite way to enjoy a screening! But also because I was a MASTER at sneaking food into movie theaters back in the day when that was a more relevant skill.
But, Over time the account warped a little bit. I got really interested researching the films I was watching. I like to try to understand historical context, learn behind the scenes stories and find other fun information that helped to make films much more fun, so I figure I should create a podcast to share what I learn. Things like… Why does this movie still matter 70 years later? What was groundbreaking about it at the time it came out? If it’s a period piece, are there historical inaccuracies in the storytelling, or maybe the costumes? Was the film a box office hit when it was released or did it not get recognition until years later?
These are things we will learn together on this journey that I’ve decided to call Cinematic Breadcrumbs.
And lastly… She loves a theme! So the movies are almost always broken out into series that all have some sort of commonality and each month or so will have a new set.
In the past, which you can find in the Highlight reels on my Instagram account @ingloriousbaguettes or on the website Ingloriousbaguettes.com, I did a series on World War II, which I paired with reading material (again, I did it so you don’t have to) including the monster of a book The Rise & Fall of the Third Reich, the Maus graphic novels, National Geographics World War II voices, and more) and selected around 15 movies that I watched in chronological order of when they were meant to take place.
Another popular series was the Italian Horror picks which I did over the month of October as a fun twist on the Halloween movie countdown. This included a smattering of choices everywhere from well-known movies like Dario Argento’s Suspiria to more under the radar spectacles like Blood and Black Lace.
On here, Each episode will focus on one main event film, with some alternative picks & references, and I will always begin the podcast with a summary and a point of view from myself. Then, for many of the episodes, we will have the pleasure of having guests come on to talk about the movie and have a more conversational dialogue about the topics it covers. I am super excited already about the line-up of guests I have for you – friends who love movies as much as me – but who are bound to have different expertise and opinions!
So thank you so much for showing up! For the rest of the intro episode, I have asked you all to write in questions you have for me – so let’s get into it!
